I have a door at the bottom of my stairs – Can I still have a stairlift?

If you have a door at the bottom of the stairs which you think may be blocked by the rail of a stairlift, you may feel like you’re unable to have a lift installed. However, this is often not the case.

A hinged rail or a stairlift with a retractable rail or slide track allows the bottom section of the rail to be folded out of the way when the stairlift is not being used. Once folded this enables access to a door that would otherwise be blocked by a normal rail. The folded rail also removes the potential tripping hazard if you have an open passageway at the bottom of the stairs.

When the stairlift is not in use the hinge can be folded out of the way by holding a button on the remote control which means you do not need to manually move the track yourself. When the button is pressed the stairlift will move up the track to park on a charging station, the hinge section will then move automatically leaving the doorway clear.
